Pixel Trade-in Program Sucks

myGoogleSite Post 35 Google Pixel 5 Content Image

I’ve used Google phones for a very long time. Starting with the Nexus and then moving on to the Pixel. I usually keep a phone for about two years and then replace it with the current model. My wife does the same with phones from Apple and broadly speaking, we own phones with similar features.

My experience has been the iPhone consistently receives a higher trade in than the Pixel, which sometimes pushes the purchase of an iPhone below that of a Pixel. To be clear, the condition of our phones at trade is very good or like new with the original packaging and all documents.

I recently purchased a Pixel 6 and after truthfully responding to the questions regarding the condition of my Pixel 5, I received an estimate of $200. Upon receipt and subsequent inspection of my trade, I received an email stating the adjusted value was to $0.00 because of a battery issue. What?

The question I asked myself was “is the battery not replaceable and even with a bad battery, is there no residual value?” Apparently not.

In this circumstance, I literally could have upgraded a similar iPhone for less money and I seriously considered returning the Pixel 6 and switching to an iPhone.

What does this say about Google? From a durability perspective, it says Apple manufactures a higher quality product and customers realize this when making a purchasing decision. How does that happen? Decision makers become confused about cost versus value.

Trade in value is an important metric, as it is a barometer for the brand. You will never be great by being cheap.
